The large IR excess seen in small samples of old close binary stars correspond to very warm dust that appears to originate from recent collisions of planets or planetesimals. Somehow, close binaries seem to be destabilizing their planetary progeny, perhaps through secular shrinkage of the stellar separation caused by angular momentum loss. The warm excess can be diagnosed by Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 um bands. The aim of this proposal is to performan an extensive survey of close binaries to examine the presence or absence of excess for different system parameters and build a picture of the type of systems that appear to create new dust and those that do not.
