Clementine 1 has sent back an estimted one million images of the lunar surface, and it has entered the second phase of its lunar mapping mission. Clementine 1 is a joint Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO)/NASA effort to test lightweight sensors and electronics for military and civilian uses. This article describes the results of the first phase of the mission. Clementine 1 will leave lunar orbit in early May to perform a flyby of the asteroid Geographos in late August. A subsequent flyby of another near-Earth asteroid in October is under consideration.
