A series of telepresence tests have been performed in the Majovae Desert on Russia's Marsokhod Mars rover prototype. The rover is a part of the Mars 96 mission, which has been moved to a 1988 launch date. The prototype has two near features over earlier versions. One is the manipulator arm from McDonnel Douglas which is not part of the mission (the Russian program has a mockup of its own arm). The second feature is a more powerful on-board computer for image processing and obstacle avoidance. The rover was controlled via a cellular telephone link from about 100 miles away.
