In this paper we extend classical Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) theories to space-time manifolds with boundaries. Considering manifolds with boundaries we connect the BV approach to gauge theories in the bulk with the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky (BFV) construction on the boundary. Examples of such theories include BV-extensions of the Yang-Mills theories and classical topological field theories known as AKSZ theories. The best known examples of AKSZ theories are BV-extensions of the Chern-Simons classical field theory, BF theories, classical Poisson sigma models. This paper is a step towards developing the corresponding full perturbative semiclassical quantum field theories.
