The circulations are considered which are induced by nonuniform distribution of helium (He II) in optically thick surface layers of Ap stars without allowance for a magnetic field. It is shown that, generally, the circulational flows smooth an initial inhomogeneity rather quickly. A family of inhomogeneities is found which do not induce the circulation and may live much longer. An efficiency of the magnetic field generation by the battery mechanism in chemically inhomogeneous stellar envelopes is analysed, with the conclusion that the battery effect cannot generate the observed magnetic fields 1 - 30 kG in the atmospheres of Ap stars.
