It is pointed out that the earth's surface exhibits faint circular patterns which have not been described before. These circles are characterized by near perfection of outline, by the presence of topographic highs (rims) along parts of their circumferences, and by their generally large scale (diameters from 7 to 700 km). Circles of this nature have been observed clearly in several areas with ancient continental crust at depth, including the western U.S. and northernmost Mexico. The circles can be interpreted as having been formed by the impacts of meteorites during the most recent major bombardment of the earth. At the time of this bombardment, which by analogy with the moon, was a discrete episode approximately 4,000 Myr ago, the earth already had a brittle crust.
