Goethites containing up to about 10 mol% Cr were synthesized both from Fe(III) and Fe(II) systems. The structural incorporation of Cr was proven by a linear decrease in the unit cell edge lengths a , b and c and a corresponding decrease in the cell volume. Crystal size and morphology were also modified as seen from TEM and XRD line widths. The out-of-plane OH bending vibration increased from 793 to 800 cm -1 reflecting a shortening of the M-OH bond length. Cr was incorporated into hematite when a 10% Cr-goethite was heated to 900°C.
