The Chesapeake Bay impact structure wasformed by a meteorite crashing to Earth duringthe late Eocene, about 35.5 million years ago(Ma). In May 2006, a scientific drilling project, sponsored by the International ContinentalScientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and theU.S. Geological Survey (USGS), completed adeep coring program into the impact structure. The deep drilling produced one of themost complete geologic sections ever obtainedin an impact structure, and studies of thecore samples will allow scientists to understanda shallow-marine impact event and itsconsequences at an unprecedented level.
