An analysis of the nuclear-active particle component of extensive air
showers has yielded evidence that the chemical composition of primary
cosmic rays at 1015 eV cannot consist solely of protons or
solely of very heavy nuclei. The data are consistent with the mixed
composition observed at lower energy (~1011 eV).
