On the basis of accumulating observational evidence that Pop. II stars are overabundant in oxygen and other heavy elements, we compute RR Lyrae models with new mixtures of heavy elements. Comparing these results with the ones obtained with a solar (Anders-Grevesse) composition we conclude that: (1) with the same total metal abundance Z the models with Pop. II mixtures yield masses smaller than the ones with a solar mixture; (2) with the same absolute Fe abundance the new masses are higher; (3) these two effects increase with Z; and (4) the masses of the double-mode RR Lyrae (especially Oosterhoff I) stars obtained with the period ratio method therefore are left uncertain up to about 0.1 solar mass until accurate abundances for the dominant elements become available for individual stars.
