Probe systems for simultaneously measuring electron and charged particle constituents have been flown on six sounding rockets launched from northern Scandinavia. This paper focuses on data from two different instruments - the Langmuir tip probe and the screened, fixed-bias blunt probe. The Langmuir tip probe, even when operating in the payload's wake, was very effective in identifying strong electron "bite-out" regions, notably at altitudes where NLC (noctilucent cloud) and/or PMSE (polar mesosphere summer echo) layering phenomena were also detected. The nature of the particle regions, at times, was observed to vary, with evidence for the dominance of charged particles of different polarities existing under different conditions (in one case, apparently even during the same flight). For this paper, we describe and classify the different possible charged particle scenarios observed for the summer flights that occurred during PMSE/NLC conditions.
