Rapid variations of energy release are observed in several solar and magnetospheric phenomena, such solar flares and magnetospheric magnetic reconnection. These variations could imply an energy release mechanism that is nonsteady but time-dependant possibly through a time-varying electric field. We present results of numerical calculations of particle (electrons and ions) trajectories in time-varying electric fields in combined X-type neutral point geometries. Details of the trajectories are presented for realistic timescales. We study the effect of the acceleration mechanism on initial thermal and non-thermal distributions and comment on the efficiency and the applicability of the mechanism on magnetic reconnection scenarios.
