The source-free Maxwell equations derived by Hughston and Jacobs (1970) for spatially homogeneous cosmologies are extended to include a source term corresponding to a cosmological charge density. It is shown that Maxwell's equations alone are sufficient to require the vanishing of the cosmological charge density in class A spacetimes. It is also found that charged solutions (where permitted) cannot be purely magnetic and that the only charged solutions in which the Poynting vector vanishes require the vanishing of the magnetic field.
