Photon counting pixel detectors with several energy bins can provide valuable additional information for imaging applications using spectral X-ray sources. This information is not accessible using integrating detectors systems. In order to profit from this advantage, the actually detected spectrum should match the photonic spectrum as closely as possible. The signal spectrum at the collection electrodes of the readout electronics deviates significantly from the photonic spectrum when planar segmented sensor geometries are used. Simulations of charge deposition and charge collection and measurements using a Medipix2 readout chip bump bonded to a 300 μm Si detector are presented. The effects of charge sharing and flourescence photons on image quality are discussed.
