Analysis of extensive data of the vertical electron density distribution for various solar activity levels, seasons, and times of day (and night) revealed the presence of fluctuations of a specific type whose occurrence is limited to nighttime winter conditions during low solar activity, the pattern of the fluctuations changing from day to day and also with the latitude. The observed fluctuations are diagrammed. They are tentatively identified as electron density fluctuations caused by horizontally propagating internal gravity waves.
