Sudden worldwide changes in the geomagnetic field with amplitudes of the order of 16 gamma are frequently recorded on magnetograms taken at earth-based stations. These small-amplitude sudden world-wide changes have been shown to exhibit similar behaviour to that of SI's and SC's. Two types of sudden worldwide change ('spike') have been observed on the University of Queensland micropulsation records. The two types of spike probably correspond to increases and decreases in the geomagnetic field. There is a correlation between numbers of spikes occurring in a 24-hour interval and total Kp for that interval. The spread of frequency of occurrence is much greater for times at solar maximum and the time between occurrences of the spikes is smaller for times near the maximum of solar activity. A possible explanation of these observations involves the proposal that the sudden worldwide changes are caused by the interaction with the magnetosphere of discontinuities associated with filament boundaries.
