Recent changes in the data acquisition system of the 30 MHz coherent backscatter radar installed in the equatorial site of Sao Luis, Brazil have allowed us to process observations more easily and quickly than previously possible. With data collected by this new system, we have been making quasi-systematic observations of nighttime F-region scattering layers since July 2010. In this talk, we describe the experimental setup for F-region observations, and report the results of an analysis of F-region scattering layers observed by the Sao Luis radar between July 2010 and July 2011, a period of low solar flux conditions. We will be presenting the variability of the observed echoes as a function of local time, altitude and season. As expected, the occurrence of pre-midnight F-region layers follows the seasonal variability of equatorial spread F in the Brazilian sector, as reported by previous studies. In addition, we report an unexpected high occurrence of pre-midnight echoes detected during a campaign of observations made around the solstice of June 2011, a period outside the regular ESF season in Brazil. Post-midnight echoes have also been observed during the campaign. We also report the first observations of near dawn F-region radar echoes in the Brazilian sector.
