Plasma properties within the sources of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) are described. The description is based on data collected during approximately 50 AKR source crossings in the altitude range between 4000 and 9000 km by the Swedish spacecraft Viking. The upper frequency cutoff of the ELF hiss is drastically decreased in all cases. From this lowered cutoff a density below 1.5/cu cm in the sources is inferred. Such a density is close to that of the hot electrons, which suggests that there should be little, if any, cold electrons. This conclusion is also supported by the fact that the low frequency cutoff of the AKR is, on average, at f(ce). This is consistent with the hot electrons, providing the dominant contribution to the density. AKR sources are found to be located within acceleration regions with at least 1 kV both below and above and with strong depletions in cold plasma density.
