Ionospheric amplitude and phase scintillation data are analyzed in order to estimate the 'information dimension' associated with the system. Amplitude and phase data for weak scintillations show that spatial fluctuations of electron density in the ionosphere can be characterized within a few DOFs. Strong scintillations are attributed to steepened density irregularities that focus the incident radio wave.
