We describe a chaotic behaviour of geodesies in plane-fronted gravitational waves with parallel rays (pp-waves). The motion of test particles in non-homogeneous pp-waves can be related to the dynamics of the Hamiltonian system either with the Hénon-Heiles potential, or polynomial potentials of higher order, or their combination. We study fractal basin boundaries, extending our previous results concerning waves with constant amplitudes to more general wave-profiles. In particular, we investigate sandwich waves and demonstrate that chaos disappears in the impulsive limit. Also, we study a situation in which the pp-wave has both homogeneous and non-homogeneous components. In this case we obtain a two-dimensional Hamiltonian system with a modified Hénon-Heiles potential with only two basins of escape, which are separated by fractal boundaries.
