The propagation characteristics of slow extraordinary waves in the upper ionosphere are investigated in detail. It is shown that wave channeling occurs along a direction perpendicular to the vector of the external magnetic field. It is also found that, when propagating in an inhomogeneous plasma, the waves move toward a resonance region for arbitrary exit angles from the source. Wave convergence in this region leads to strong wave focusing.
