An analysis of data on geomagnetic pulsations during the solar eclipse of October 12, 1977 shows that the amplitude and polarization ellipse of the pulsations are altered considerably during passage through the ionosphere. Theoretical estimates are made which indicate that short-period pulsations can be generated during the supersonic motion of the eclipse shadow at E-layer heights. Pulsations with periods close to those theoretically calculated were observed during the eclipse.
