Incoherent scatter data were used to investigate the variations in the shape of the daytime, mid-latitude ionospheric electron density profile associated with changes in geomagnetic activity. It was shown that the mean value of a factor relating the Faraday rotation from a geostationary satellite to the total electron content up to 2000 km is practically the same as the mean value of the factor relating the Faraday rotation and total electron content up to 1000 km. Therefore, the linear relationship obtained between the ionospheric parameters and the 3-hr geomagnetic index is used to deduce the height at which the mean factor value should be evaluated as a function of the geomagnetic index.
