Comets: Inclinations, Long-Period Comets
Scientific paper
We analyze the inclination-distribution of the observed population of long-period comets, split in eight subsamples for different ranges of the reciprocal of the original semimajor axis x. Even though the overall sample of LP comets more or less follows a sinusoidal law, classically attributed to an Oort cloud with spherical symmetry, we find striking differences in the i-distribution for the different ranges of x. We show that the differential action of planetary perturbations on comets in direct and in retrograde orbits can explain such a behavior, except for the "new" comets that show an excess of direct orbits.
