Since 1998, the Insitute of Applied Physics at the University of Bern, Switzerland, has conducted yearly surveys of the stratospheric water vapor distribution over the northern hemisphere. The measurements were taken with an airborne microwave radiometer that was flown onboard a Learjet of the Swiss Air Force. From the measured spectra, altitude profiles of stratospheric water vapor from 15-60 km altitude were derived along the flight track. Water vapor trends for the tropics, the mid latitudes and the arctic were derived from the measurements in summer 1998 and 2002. The observed trends confirm the increase of water wapor in the stratosphere that has been observed by other groups. They also show a slight decrease of mesospheric water vapor in the arctic.
