Energetic ion composition of the outer ring current (L=5-7) changes drastically during magnetic storms. It has been reported that H+ ions are dominant during quiet times, while ions of ionospheric origin, O+ ions in particular, become an important constituent during storms. Recent Geotail study showed that this ion composition change in the outer ring current is a consequence of the composition change occurring in the near-Earth plasma sheet. However, it is still controversial how O+ ions are energized to the ring current energies ( ~200 keV) in the plasma sheet. In the present study we investigate the energy density of H+, He+, and O+ ions in the plasma sheet (X>-30 Re) during the main phase of magnetic storms, using energetic (9-210 keV) particle flux data obtained by the EPIC instrument on the Geotail spacecraft. The focus of the study is placed on how the O+/H+ and He+/H+ energy density ratios change as the Dst index decreases. We also investigate the effect of storm-time substorms on the energy density ratios. We will discuss what mechanisms are responsible for change of the energetic ion composition in the plasma sheet during magnetic storms.
