We propose to use Mopra's unique upgraded capabilities to complete an unprecedented survey of the earliest phases of massive star formation, and we request long-term status to do so. In a large swath (20deg) of the galactic plane in Carina and Vela, we are bootstrapping from NANTEN surveys of this region to find, using multiple tracers, all the dense gas, and characterising its physical state (temperature, density, mass, luminosity, etc.). This will allow us to take an unbiased census of all massive protostars and protostellar clusters in this region, as well as identifying massive starless cloud cores, and for the first time (a) uniformly identify the normal evolutionary stages of higher-mass star formation, (b) characterise the physical conditions in the dense gas at each stage, (c) directly compute the lifetimes of each stage, and (d) compare these results with other biased surveys. NOTE: this is the OPEN PART of a two-part open/UNSW proposal.
