Realistic major SEP event modeling lags behind current efforts in CME/ICME modeling at this point in time. While on the surface the implementation of such models might seem straightforward, in practice there are many aspects of their construction that make progress slow. Part of the difficulty stems from the complex physics of the problem, some of which remains controversial, and part is simply related to the logistics of coupling the various concepts of acceleration and transport to the increasingly realistic MHD models of CMEs and ICMEs. Before a Strategic Capability in SEP event modeling can begin to be realized, the latter challenge must be addressed. Several groups, including CISM, CSEM and the LWS TR&T Focus Science Team on the subject have been grappling with this ostensibly more tractable part of the problem. This presentation is an effort to collect and communicate the challenges faced in the course of applying MHD results in various approaches. One goal is to suggest what MHD model improvements and products would be most useful toward this goal. Another is to highlight the realities of compromises that must necessarily be made in the SEP event models regardless of the perfection of the MHD descriptions of CMEs and ICMEs.
