The paper reports observations of the 3.3-GHz ground-state radio lines of CH in an extended area that includes the continuum background sources W49 A and B. It is found that the CH lines appear in emission in all the directions observed and that the emission intensity generally increases toward the continuum peaks corresponding to the two background sources. These findings are taken as evidence that the CH ground state is inverted under a variety of conditions in interstellar space and that the inversion results mainly from characteristic properties of the radical itself and its energy-level structure. The results are shown to be consistent with the previous conclusion that W49 B is closer to the sun than W49 A. The feasibility of using CH as a galactic spiral-arm tracer is discussed.
