This narrative about the beginnings of CESR and CLEO covers mainly the period from 1974, when discussions about the possibility of building an e+e- collider at Cornell were begun, to 1981 when CLEO had been taking data for some eighteen months. Labeling this as a narrative is meant to emphasize that much of it is undocumented and relies on my memory.
