The basic objectives of solar investigations in the framework of the Solar-Terrestrial Energy Progam (STEP) are examined. Particular attention is given to energy transfer from the inner layers outward to the corona and heliosphere. Also considered are the generation of magnetic fields and helioseismological methods for investigating the inner structure of the sun. The interaction between local and global fields is considered.
