VLF measurements are analyzed in an effort to explain the anomalous absorption of radio waves during and after magnetic storms in the case of the intense precipitation of electrons with energies exceeding 40 keV. The results indicate that corpuscular streams are the main cause of additional ionization of the lower ionosphere during the majority of magnetic storms. It is noted that the intensity of corpuscular streams precipitating in the atmosphere can be calculated on the basis of VLF phase variations.
