A search for patterns in the longitudinal distribution of sunspots was made with the aim of developing models of large-scale convection and investigating the generation of solar magnetic fields. Several features characterizing the temporal behavior of the longitudinal distribution of sunspots were delineated. It was found that the sunspot distribution is nonrandom. In addition, regions fully free from sunspots were sometimes observed on the background of intense solar activity. Sharp transitions from low to high solar activity (appearing at once in a wide range of longitudes) were sometimes observed in periods of increasing solar activity. Finally, it is noted that sites appear to exist on the sun where the probability of the appearance of activity is heightened; these regions are found to experience differential rotation.
