The contribution of ion-cyclotron instability to the formation of the asymmetric ring current is examined. The resonant interaction of westward-drifting high-energy protons with Alfven waves is analyzed in the framework of a self-consistent model taking into account the inhomogeneity of the plasmasphere. It is shown that pitch-angle scattering by the waves leads to proton precipitation into the ionosphere and the formation of an asymmetric current loop ion in the region of the evening plasmaspheric bulge.
