Various theoretical attempts to explain Cerenkov radiations within the upper atmosphere by the exploration of different properties of the medium are briefly reviewed. Particular attention is given to the analysis of the nature and characteristics of VLF hisses in terms of incoherent Cerenkov radiation and the occurrence of resonance cone due to an infinitesimal oscillating dipole within the medium excited by suitable range of frequencies.
