A high-power radar operating at a wavelength of 10 cm was installed in a 45 ft radio telescope at the Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern, to make observations of the Russian earth satellites and their carrier rockets. In this paper the reasons for choosing the wavelength of 10 cm are considered, and the capabilities of a radar of this type in contributing to the I.G.Y. observations are discussed. The results obtained from 30 October to 1 December 1957, are described.
