In a seismic S-wave velocity map, a narrow low velocity anomaly exists which connects at least four major hotspots in the South Atlantic. This anomaly may correspond to the breakup seam between South America and Africa. Three models supporting such a possibility are proposed and examined. These are: (1) upwelling along this line. (2) lithosphere-controlled passive breakup, and (3) plume-controlled breakup with lateral channeled flow from plumes to the seam of breakup, where rifts were created between adjacent hotspots.
