The acid distributions of oils and coals from a wide depth range in the Mahakam Delta, Indonesia were studied, in order to determine the effects of oil migration. The crude oils of the Mahakam Delta, Indonesia, are particularly well suited for such a study, since the depth of the reservoir can be directly related to the migration distance of the oil. Two processes seem to control the changes in the acidic biomarker distributions during oil migration: solubilization of immature organic matter during migration and, to a much lesser extent, geochromatography. Both processes are reflected differently in the acid distributions of the oils. The solubilization process is most clearly reflected in variations taking place with increasing degree of migration: increasing shift towards long chain acids with a higher even predominance and increase in cyclic acids typical of immature zones. A geochromatographic effect may be seen in the depletion of short vs . long chain acids with increasing vertical migration distance.
