Marine plankton shows a variation in C 13 from -9 to about -30 %.. The fractionation with respect to the oceanic inorganic carbon appears to be due only to the photosynthetic process in the phytoplankton. The wide range can be explained on the basis of now laboratory experiments as being due to environmental differences in temperature, pH and carbon availability.
