We discuss, from the theoretical point of view, what a thought experiment to measure the meson-photon transition form factor for a $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta'$ could provide, exploring its implications. We consider possible mechanisms that can eventually describe an auxetic pion-photon transition form factor, as indicated by the $\gamma^*\gamma\to\pi^0$ \babar data at large-$Q^2$ and discuss possible explanations of the antithetic trend observed by the \babar Collaboration for the non-strange part of the $\gamma^*\gamma\to\eta(\eta')$ form factor. We also estimate the effect on the transition form factors of a finite virtuality of the quasi-real photon in the light-cone sum rules. The analysis also includes the CLEO data for $\eta(\eta')$.
