Gravitational Collapse

Scientific paper

A solution of the Newtonian equations of continuous media is presented in which the radial stresses vanish everywhere inside a spherical distribution of matter at rest. The distribution remains at rest under the influence of tangential stresses only. These stresses are the "classical limit" of the tangential stresses of the corresponding system in general relativity.
