Two types of high-temperature calorimeter, a Tian-Calvet type heat flow calorimeter (room temperature to 1000 °C) and a two-cell heat flow calorimeter (up to 1500 °C) were used to measure the enthalpy changes of the decomposition of gibbsite and boehmite to γ-Al2O3(cr), respectively. The results are 101.89 and 46.60 kJ·mol-1. The standard enthalpies of formation of gibbsite and boehmite were obtained by combining these values with the existing thermodynamic properties of related substances. Comparing our results with those from previous work showed that the following values are reliable: ΔfHmo[Al(OH)3(gibbsite)] = -(1293.18 ± 1.20) kJ·mol-1 and ΔfHmo[AlOOH (boehmite)] = -(996.10 ± 1.30) kJ·mol-1.
