The solution of geophysical, astrophysical, and applied problems in atmospheric optics on the basis of numerical experiments requires development of a whole set of computational techniques for calculating the radiation fields of an atmosphere-planet system under different conditions of illumination and observation with allowance for atmospheric sphericity and inhomogeneity. This study outlines the fundamental principles and capabilities of such universal techniques as the Monte-Carlo method and the method of characteristics with iterations in terms of collision multiplicity for solving problems of atmospheric optics. A comparison is drawn between these two methods, and recommendations are set forth as to their applications.
