Earth Ionosphere: Heating, Earth Plasmasphere: Heating
Scientific paper
An algorithm for calculating the heat fluxes and local sources of heat arising in the Earth's magnetosphere owing to dissipation of the energy of the ring current as the ring current interacts with the outer plasmasphere is presented. It is shown for a simple example that heating occurs far from the geomagnetic equator and is more efficient when the R mode is excited. The calculations showed that the heat fluxes can reach values of ≡3·1011eV·s-1·cm-2. Such heat fluxes could significantly increase the temperature of the outer plasmasphere (≡8500K).
