The phenomena of atmospheric halos are summarized. It is well known that they are due to the passage of sunlight (or moonlight) through atmospheric ice crystals. The calculations that establish this are not so well known, however. Here the calculations for the most commonly observed halo (that which occurs at an angular radius of 0143-0807/18/6/004/img2 about the sun) are presented concisely, yet are sufficiently complete to permit other halo effects to be analysed, by straightforward extension of the method outlined.
