The optical depth along a vertical path in an atmosphere in hydrostatic
equilibrium can be calculated from an integral of the Voigt function for
the case where the absorption is due to spectral lines. Series
expansions are presented that allow rapid evaluation of this integral
over all values of the independent variables, frequency and pressure.
