Some techniques for modeling the thermal properties of Martian soil are discussed. A simple thermal model of an isotropically uniform semi-infinite soil layer is outlined, and models which incorporate seasonal effects as well as their influence on surface temperature are examined. Temperature curves yielded by 'annual' and 'daily' models are compared, and surface-temperature measurements made by American and Soviet spacecraft are interpreted in terms of the different models. The role of heat exchange between soil and atmosphere is considered.
