Basalt samples containing ore grains of homogeneous, stoichiometric titanomagnetite (45 mol% ulvöspinel) were used to measure the diffusion coefficient and activation energy of titanium in titanomagnetite. The values were obtained by means of combined ore microscopic observations, electron microprobe studies and magnetic measurements. The samples were heated in air at 600 °C and 1000 °C and the time necessary to form lamellae of haemo-ilmenite in titanomagnetite was measured. The value for the activation energy of titanium in titanomagnetite thus obtained is 0.5 eV.
