In addition to PSBL ion flows, high-speed plasma flow events (several hundreds km/s) have been reported in single spacecraft observations in the central plasma sheet (CPS) often near the midnight sector during magnetospheric substorms, but also between substorm events. The flows are thought to be associated with magnetotail reconnection processes. Such bursty bulk flows (BBFs) have been considered an important mode of plasma transport from the more distant magnetotail to the near-Earth region and the aurora. We use the energetic particle spectrometer RAPID on the multi-spacecraft mission Cluster to further investigate the characteristics of fast flow events observed during the plasma sheet crossings of Cluster in August and September 2001.
