The present state of understanding of the bulk viscosity of a dilute polyatomic gas is briefly reviewed. Theoretical and experimental approaches to the study of this subject are addressed. It is concluded that the lack of experimental data in this area over a broad temperature range is of particular significance for the high-speed entry of probes into planetary atmospheres.
